interior space: hendler house Miami

I'm excited to finally showcase the Hendler & Mouse House.
My darling friend and colleague at the Art Institute, Sonia has agreed to share her space for MM. In description any 2 level, floor to windows loft in Miami's ultra trendy Design District is expected to be fancy. But it isn't until you actually step foot in her pad that you realize how charming and thoughtful it really is. Every nook of their space is curated. She wowed me with her design sense and savvy antique collection so I spent an afternoon last week snapping a few shots of the loft she shares with her hubby & chi.
Domestic life: balancing between husband & iphone
From their rehabbed Victorian love seat, to the hand painted details every piece is carefully considered.
Loki her 6 yr old Chi showing off his multi-tasking skills as companion/foot stool.
I love the clean look of astro turf as carpet.
Hand painted grandfather clock & silver Champagne bucket as remote control caddy.
Gentle Giant? Her husband is a personal trainer and Pro MMA fighter. I think this painting says it all.
Envious of this minimalist mantle place?

the inspiration.
Treasure vitrine
recent acquisition: Russian J.Adler-esq porcelain from The Antique Trove in Arizona.
curiosities under the stairs
Lokis claims his place as king of the stairwell reading room.
Graffiti mural greets you in the foyer.
How cute is that teenie pane of glass on the saw horses?
detail of their guest bathroom, notice apothecary jars filled with her baby blocks and origami bits...

Hi Sonia, can you please give us a little info on your wee palace? Describe your thought process on buying treasures?
"My process of acquiring and selecting treasures goes hand in hand with my eating habits. Just as I enjoy picking apart my food, as if preparing it for
anatomical study, I enjoy meticulously sifting though endless thrift, rummage and craigslist ads to find my shiny treasures. The word "methodical" comes to mind"

Speaking of treasures.....I keep my favorites hidden away as my best secrets. I once scored a vintage mint condition Louis Vuitton Speedy bag with the original receipt (late 1970's) for $10.00(church bazaar). Most meaningful treasure is a porcelain 1930's cake server that I came across one week before my wedding for $3.00 (thrift store)."

Please share the story behind the Frank Ghery Tiffany vase, and how it was almost kidnapped. "The Tiffany vase was an engagement gift from my in laws. It was almost lost to the universe when a drunken man at my 09' Art Basel party tried to snatch it. When questioned by my sister on his way out (toting the pearly treasure) he said, "the hostess told me I could have it". Absurd!"

Tell us about the painted mantel and where that inspiration came from.
"Mommy dearest bestowed the artist genes to my sisters and left me with the eye for design. I felt that the walls were large enough to act as a canvas. We sketched out the design and painted it in one evening. I got the idea from an interior design book where they painted an entire room as a rouge red victorian tea parlor. I felt that the concept was unique because it created the illusion of opulence and scale. (easier than it looks)."

What do you like most about the space?

"The best part of our apartment is the space. It's always a plus when you have 30ft ceilings. My Mother was a serial hoarder of clutter... in light of that I abhor unnecessary objects. I enjoy fine lines, show cased pieces and a lot of leg room."

A few Sonia-isms

This is wonderful.

Also, I love the juxtaposition of her husband the dainty love seat. Does he take Mouse for walks? I would love to see that.
