I want to skin you

Talia Greene, Alterations 2003
digital print on rice paper, embroidery hoops, thread, beads

My loved ones are no stranger to hearing things like, "I want to skin you alive" or "I'm going to eat your face off" or the rare but at times appropriate: "chop you up and turn you into soup". I say these things with the utmost tenderness of course. When I came across the work of Talia Greene I was immediately in love with her infestation series and natural patterns but there's something about this piece [above] that is idealistically perfect. I joke about taxidermy-ing my dog and making lampshades out of my bf's tattoo skin. I love the idea of preservation. Seeing that I can't actually slice him up to admire I would love to preserve his skin patterns just like this piece. I once tried the cute etsy route and purchased all the supplies to make something similar to this embroidery but I just can't sit down and commit myself to craftyness. I think I might just choose one or two of our favorite body parts, scan them and try to present them similarly.
While on this slightly macabre topic I've been dying to visit that weird hair museum in Missouri:
Encasing and decorating with a deceased loved one's hair is so absurdly beautiful. For now at least I'll stick to digital representations.

great find: Esther Traugot

Esther Traugot, Bee 2009
bee, thread; 1/2in x 5ft
I really dig Esther's work; I suggest reading her statement. This bee piece is one of the cutest things I have ever seen. I want all insects to wear crochet sweaters.

On a random note, we are currently hosting this huge and semi aggressive hornworm caterpillar on our gardenia plant. We are no stranger to weird bugs here in Miami but this fat little bastard is a new one to me. I would never knit him a tiny outfit but I enjoy seeing him munch and loaf on my balcony. My bf wants to pin him once he morphs into a Sphinx moth but I'd rather just let him go on his way.

antibodies

Patricia Urquiola
If I owned this Antibodi Lounge chair I assure you each crease and fold would be filled with pita chip crumbs, misc food bits, lost hair ties and stray kitty litter. If you looked at my sectional right now you'd think I'm a total filth bag. I have microcosms of gross stuff wedged in the the cracks.

chair couture

My apartment is only 600sq ft and it's been really difficult to find an eyeball friendly, space efficient chair for our itty-bitty living room. I've tried the antique shop/thrift route and browsed all the typical brick and mortar furniture stores. I'd prefer not to make the obvious Ikea choice but I feel my options are limited at the moment. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Mary Engel, Kitty 2008
mixed media
; 17 x 24 x 18 inches
This ridiculous piece gives me the urge to head to the thriftiness and blow my recently cashed shillings on some junk. Wednesday is the best day of the week to go thrifing because that's when all the new merch goes out. I don't need anything... but who ever needs something. I had a lapse of judgment one day and decided not to purchase this glorious piece of shit:(please disregard my greasy curtain bangs)
I tried to be logical and sensible and left it there among other treasures so the thrift gods would later bless me. I wonder who now owns this aloof needle point pussy willow kitty? I think I'm due for some good scores.

payday
