"Seventeen horses have been mysteriously slaughtered and butchered in Miami since January. The SPCA suspects the killings are feeding a black market for horse meat." Every time I hear this horse murder coverage I let out a little neigh. I was never a pony obsessed child but I do appreciate a well made equine piece and I'd never ingest their meat.

500th post & Blogiversary

me melodia
It's a tad belated on the 1 year anniversary here at me melodia but who really cares. Not only does this mark my first year of blogging about art, taxidermy, housewares and just a bunch of nothing about something, but this is also my 500th post. Wosh. Time has seriously whizzed by and in it's wake my head is spinning. In the past year I've maintained my sanity through continuing this blog, been inspired to pursue creative outlets and have made some darling internet friends (you know who you are). I love every single one of you who have visited and continue to stop by. Being committed and staying true to my integrity has always been a priority but it's really easy to get distracted. I'm happy to celebrate this blogiversary and hope the next year is as fruitful and rewarding. In the upcoming days I plan to introduce new features, incorporate a more interactive platform, update the layout and offer some exciting treats and contest.
Thanks again for hanging around!
Oh, and I'd like to thank Elaine Bradford for creating the above piece from her freaks of nurture series.
I've gifted it to the blog in my mind.

So far this morning I've painted my nails, browsed Indeed for a new job and I'm presently scrolling through Mike Fleming's photo blog: Gonna do it anyway.

check out Mike's FlickrNormally I am a ninja with tabs and stealthy fake working but lately I don't give a crap. I have both my blogger window and mikes photos out in the open.

Proximity Magazine: In Defense of the Philosophy of Art
"There is a saying, attributed to the painter Barnett Newman, that “aesthetics is for art what ornithology is for the birds.” This quip sums up the divide between those who make art and those who think about art. Neither birds nor artists need their academic counterparts to do what they do..."

One obvious sign that I'm in nesting mode is that I was shopping around for a door stop recently. People who rarely stay at home don't even bother with unnecessaries like tools to prevent doors from slamming shut. Well, I was and my boyfriend's beat up high school Shakespeare book as stopper was beginning to get on my nerves. When you want to enjoy a cross breeze you have to deal with the persistent slamming. Anywaysimobsessedwithhomepurchases, I happily came across this Schleuderball from Kwikshop and knew I had found the one. Although it wasn't the most pleasant thing to lug around in my tote while cycling through Berlin it was worth it.
Even though this rich leather ball will never be used for any German recreational sports it will be very appreciated.
I had originally debated on buying that nautical monkey fist knot stopper that's been circulating the blogs but spotting it in the uncommongoods catalog left a bad taste in my mouth. Not to say this piece isn't luscious but I just wasn't compelled.
If I were to go the nautical route I'd want something authentic with some memory in it.

Gunta Stolzl 1927
head of weaving at the Bauhaus
One of the many highlights of my recent trip was visiting the comprehensive Bauhaus exhibition at Martin-Gropius museum. If there was ever any doubt that the Bauhaus school has influenced everything we deem "good design" and cool it's definitely been eliminated. Of the 100o objects exhibited, one piece that surprisingly stood out to us was this Gunta Stolzl tapestry (jpg doesn't do justice). Among all the furniture, innovative text and material studies this ridiculously bright textile was one of the most relevant to today's neon art aesthetic.
An other piece that keeps floating around my empty little head is this handmade tapestry from starsyling I spotted at their boutique. It's so texturally interesting and would look great as a floor mat or wall hanging.

While I couldn't justify spending over 300 € on this I so desperately want it and would certainly make use of it. I love this treasure purposed as a picnic blanket:

Even though Stystyling is a tad busy (flailing hand motions and hissing sounds if you were hearing me say this) for my taste, I did pick up a gorgeous hand dipped fringe necklace. I can't wait to incorporate this into an outfit. I'm miles away from endorsing an all over print but touches of flair are oh so necessary.
crafting the fringes
Seeing that I can't afford a large textural piece at the moment this little bit of color and motion will have to do. Unless I purchase my own loom and have a sudden folk streak I don't see a Gunta Stolzl inspiration in my future.

I'm home from my Berlin vacation and I am trying to get back into the swing of things. It was such a great time and I am more inspired than ever to make a big change in my life. Getting out of your surroundings does wonders for the soul. Along with enjoying quality time with my pal Tiffany, I met some cool people, ate amazing foods, cycled throughout the city and visited some special locations like a a geodesic dome graveyard, an abandoned dinosaur amusement park and the chalk cliffs off the Baltic Sea. I admit, I did not shoot as much as I should have. The combination of biking, trying to avoid looking touristy and just being caught up in a whirlwind is to fault.
Here are just a few exceptional moments that I managed to capture:
bar staff of birds at one of Berlin's many parks
Crazy circus tent spotted on the way to the Ostsee
hundreds of jelly fish at Sassnitz
Baltic Sea dwelling swans
abandoned dinosaur park in Treptow
T-Rex!
A much anticipated trip to Teufelsberg
perfect weather for breaking into a geodesic dome
you can tell I really liked it in there
Now I'm just trying to bite down and bear the rest of the work week. I will surely try to get back to all your comments and catch up on posts but all in due time. It's always a bit daunty to play catch up when your mind is floating else where. Many more post on Berlin, recent discoveries and treasures to come.
I missed you guys!
