mini obsession: nests

Oil, acrylic, and graphite on Canvas;60 x 60 inches

I have been recently obsessing over finding the perfect bee's or hornet's nest lately. While reasonable people are watching Pamela Love jewelery or Rick Owens Jackets, I'm hunting for some decorative organic nonsense. I don't remember what triggered this fascination but I just can't wait till i get my hands on one. I'll most likely want to puke when it actually arrives though. I had the same reaction when my jungle nymph bug came in the mail-- I couldn't even look at the box all afternoon. Anyways, pending willies or not I'm bidding on these two hornet's nest this week:

I promise you guys my apartment wont look like hornetboy1970's.
*update: I was outbid!

new clothing inspiration

I've been noticing an obvious shift in my clothing interests. I have been recently drawn to a more sophisticated yet playful style that is a mix of old school secretary, Victorian child and playful girlishness. I've been on the hunt for a cute vintage pair of saddle shoes and on Friday I won these oxford wingtips from Ebay.
An other recent acquisition is this rapscallion romper by Samantha Pleet for Urban Outfitters.
I've picked up a few other pieces from her spring and fall collections and I am in love!
Continuing with this new look inspiration: this grosgrain black bow headband from XXI has been making several appearances on my head lately. The one thing I do hope to avoid is resembling Lucy Van Pelt or Diane Arbus' grenade boy:
I tend to gravitate to somewhat precious and costume-y looks so I need to keep these images in mind as a point of reference.

still an obsession: all things retro

I just discovered Retro Thing a great blog and resource for vintage gadgets and retro inspired technologies. I've been distracted all morning by post after post of interesting tidbits and products.

Southdale Center; the worlds first modern shopping mall
Dampfroboters; Strenco's German steam robot
Another sweet site that I just came across is Art Thang that offers a variety of meticulously restored items like vintage telephones from the 1920s through the 1960s.

Looking at all these lovely items inspired me to take a quick browsing trip on eBay. Now I'm tempted to pick up a little vintage stapler to class up my workspace:

mini obsession: vintage wrapping paper

Leave it to me to fall head over heels with something so trivial and unnecessary (yet oh so lovely). I have lately been obsessing over vintage wrapping paper. Some of these style are so precious and nostalgic that they may outshine the gifts themselves. Here are a few that I have found while browsing on Ebay:
