tchotchke

Mary Engel, Kitty 2008
mixed media
; 17 x 24 x 18 inches
This ridiculous piece gives me the urge to head to the thriftiness and blow my recently cashed shillings on some junk. Wednesday is the best day of the week to go thrifing because that's when all the new merch goes out. I don't need anything... but who ever needs something. I had a lapse of judgment one day and decided not to purchase this glorious piece of shit:(please disregard my greasy curtain bangs)
I tried to be logical and sensible and left it there among other treasures so the thrift gods would later bless me. I wonder who now owns this aloof needle point pussy willow kitty? I think I'm due for some good scores.

payday

finally.

flat pets

These deliciously furless cardboard mascots by Chris Ratcliffe and Garudio Studiage border that absolutely useless/necessary realm. Yep, that means I want one.
I was instantly reminded of that SATC episode where Charlotte was given a flat baby. I'd spit in someone's face if I was handed a carboard infant but a cardboard kitty would be highly welcomed.

burp

Jonathan Correira
Upset Stomach 2007; Screenprint
As someone who loves cats, mice
(alive, stuffed, ingested etc.), and suffers from nearly daily stomach aches, I'm finding this very cute.

you are beautiful

winter drawings; 2007 digital print on archival paper, ed of 10 prints
available for purchase
I really wish this wasn't photoshopped.
I had this photo as my desktop for a hot second but I quickly removed it in fear that in an office setting it's a bit, hang in there baby.

happy friday

"Kitten's tea party" by Walter Potter. Dates from around 1871; Victorian Mount

The Kitten's Tea and Croquet Party has 37 little kittens having tea, or playing croquet, with onlookers and waitresses. Walter Potter shows great attention to detail, two kittens appear to be reading a time-table, another is brushing its hair. A social gathering of some importance seems to be taking place, a courteous young kitten is offering a plate of 'mouse tarts' to his neighbour.

if I had a time machine...

I'd stop by 1910 to meet this little one:
In 1910, on the first airplane flight across the English Channel to carry a passenger, American aviator John Moisant flew from Paris to London accompanied by both his mechanic and his cat, named either Mademoiselle Fifi or Paree, depending on which newspaper you believe. Later that year Moisant died in a crash near New Orleans. via Shorpy

fun book: why paint cats

Cats have been a big influence in my life both personally and artistically. This past weekend was very kitty consuming due to this marvelous video and my equally obsessed with kitties friends. One of my past large scale photography projects was even based on the feeling of being an indoor cat owner and becoming a 'crazy cat lady'. One book that's reminded me I am still very normal and far from being a weirdo over the top cat person is Why Paint Cats:The Ethics of Feline Aesthetics by Burton Silver and Heather Busch.
Even if you don't feel like purchasing this book I totally recommend flipping through it next time you're at a book store. I thankfully have a friend who loves to give me random and sometimes cringe-worthy presents who surprised me with this doozy of a book.

ebay score: kitty painting

I've been on a hunt for the perfect cat painting and I can tell you, it isn't a simple feat. Just browse Ebay or Etsy and you'll find hundreds of pieces that are eligible candidates for the MOBA. But after some patience and luck I can now happily say that I am the proud winner of this yummy/tacky little gem:
"Oriental short hair white", 8x10" oil on canvas board; 2008; T.F. Lu
When I came across this auction I was instantly reminded of a photograph by Terrance Koh from the 2006 VICE photo issue.
This image titled, "Gilbert with herpes in eye" is nothing but amazing in it's subtle grossness and tranquility.
