warm habitation

I love this burrower knitwear series. Is this not the most novel idea? I think anyone with a tiny fur tot can appreciate this.
In a few hours I'll be flying up to Boston to meet up with the in-laws for a chilly white Christmas. I'll be traveling with a very bundled up Chihuahua. I usually take Parker in her dog bag but she ends up nestling into my sweater mid way trip. She's mastered the art of burrowing into warm soft things. I need to knit up something to sling this critter around with me in style.

thank you

Robb Putnam, Mongrel (detail); 2008 fabric, plastic, leather, vinyl, thread glue, acrylic medium and mixed mediums, 63” x 17” x 14”
A sincere thank you to everyone who sent Parker well wishes today.
I don't think she can withstand much more doggy trauma. She's so fragile that an allergic reaction to a bug bite caused her tiny face to swell up like a balloon. I kinda feel like a major dipshit for overreacting this morning and rushing to the vet instead of googling that shit. Had I done so I would have just spent $10 on over the counter benadryl versus spending much much more at the animal clinic. This is a clear cut sign that I'm going to be one of those parents isn't it?

preservation

Yesterday I stumbled upon Neon Tights, a cute group themed drawing blog. Last week's theme was childhood pets and their eventual death. This drawing below is my favorite.
Oskar's brother josef's budgie "sigge" got jammed in the door by mistake:
I still think about my early pets like the 11 year old goldfish who turned gray, my brother's carnivorous snapping turtle and Lady, my tabby who would religiously crap on my parent's bed. Each of these pets suffered a shitty demise. Anyone who frequently visits MM or follows my tweets should know that I am absolutely obsessed with my chiwa Parker. We cherish this little weirdo so much that we've already brought up the unpleasantness of her death plans. Surprisingly to Ben, I've been hesitant about taxidermying her. Its fine with other animals but not my furry soul mate. I'd rather preserve her tiny bones than mount her in some bizarre coerced way.
I've been looking into some alternative animal preservation techniques lately like freeze dry preservation.

Good Magazine: foods that might make you sick
I'd like fault the threat of poisoning by leafy green for my decision to binge at burgerking today.
But, in reality, last night's rush to the vet after Parker suffered what appears to be a mild seizure is partly to cause for my insatiable onion ring craving. I usually gravitate to the fatty foods when under stress. Thankfully the baby is doing alright-- poor thing apparently has *low blood sugar.
*Note to self: Don't sympathy eat for her.

Parker's Halloween costume

This year she's going as William Hundley's chihuahua on burger!
A marriage of all the things I love: chiwas, burgers & the internet.
The burgers didn't take too long to construct. Getting Parker to trust me again will probably take a bit longer though.

Parker's business box

By way of convenience, sanitation and sheer laziness my bf built our Chi a balcony bathroom. Arguing over who would take her down to do business before bedtime and feet cleaning duties was getting old. On top of the fact that south beach is absolutely filthy and parasitic, she was attacked earlier this year by a rogue mutt. This super simple box has made all of our lives better. I recently stumbled upon a brand Doggy Duty that sells the same concept for urban dog owners except you can pick theirs up for a whopping $225! Ours in total, cost less than 40 bucks and it was made with love.
Here she is depositing her first pee. She acclimated quickly and now just does her stuff on command.
The box just requires some simple maintenance and grass up keep.
We need to remove the doo immediately (ofcourse) and water the freshly peed grass to prevent burning.

Bambi ♥

I was intending to write something on the fact that my chihuahua Parker needs an $1,800 dual knee surgery soon. Major trauma on both her tiny deer body and my wallet. But before I even began working on my puppy woes post I found this NPR news story in my inbox. This story is making my head spin. You have people like me who are willfully about to spend thousands on improving the quality of life of a 4lb animal then beasts like this Dorothy woman who beat them to death!Woman Beats Bambi To Death With Shovel
What kind of person would beat Bambi to death?
Denise Richardson of Euclid, Ohio is exactly that kind of person.
Denise Richardson of Euclid, Ohio is exactly that kind of person.
EUCLID, Ohio -- Resident Dorothy Richardson, 76, said she was defending herself when she beat to death a 25-pound fawn that was crouched in her flower bed, then stuffed the fawn's body in a cardboard box and put it out on trash day.
Richardson said she has been defending her garden against deer for years and this time took a shovel and beat the fawn until it died.
She said the fawn's eyes contacted hers, like he was going to jump and bite her head off.
Euclid City Councilman Christopher Gruber says Richardson told him something different.
Gruber says Richardson said she hit it once and, according to her, it screamed and she hit it two more times, then she said that what she wanted to do was put it at the end of the yard so the other deer know not to mess with her.
Maybe she could've tried coyote urine before going the fawn-bashing route?

animals make better friends

"There is something deeply moving about a man referring to an animal, plainly and unsentimentally, as his best friend."

my family
After seeing this review I'm interested in reading the philosopher and the wolf by Mark Rolands wolf owner and philosophy professor at the University of Miami.
"Animals cannot play Scrabble or pay compliments; they don't have exciting news and won't discuss yesterday's game. What they do offer, to those who open themselves to it, is a powerful constancy, an uncomplicated friendship that simplifies and heals as it reminds us of our ancestral life before we struck the fraught bargain of great resourcefulness and ingenuity in return for a greater capacity for malevolence and deceit...Reading this book, like living in kinship with an animal, offers a chance for something very fine to rub off on us -- like brushing against a monarch's cape and being sprinkled with gold powder."my family

"Brenin, a giant of 150 pounds, standing 35 inches at the shoulder on paws the size of baseball mitts, accompanied Rowlands everywhere, even napping under a desk as Rowlands delivered his philosophy lectures to rooms full of nervous students whose unzipped bookbags were occasionally invaded by a wandering nose in search of snacks."
I have always felt a strong connection with animals. I wish it were acceptable to bring my dog to work. Daily interaction with clients and candidates has me yearning for the nonverbal connection with my pets when I get home.

dog attack

I didn't post anything yesterday because my poor tiny Chihuahua Parker was attacked by an unleashed dog. She suffered a few bites and bruises on her 4 lb frame but fortunately she'll be OK.
She seriously resembles the Carlos nightlight by Kathleen Walsh. While at the 24hr vet we jokingly said we should pick one up so she doesn't feel alone. :/
Here are a few photos of her before all the stitches and trauma:
